The shape of tools

di Fiorella Bulegato

The multipurpose Rhino tool for adjusting snowboards, skateboards and snowboards, demonstrates the possibilities for design in new fields that have specific requisites and are not familiar territories for designers. The tool developed by Enrique Luis Sardi for the milanese company Comvert is  a sort of pocket tool box, combining everything the user needs – 9/16″, 1/2″ and 3/8″ spanners, four screwdrivers, spatula, comb (for applying wax) and a bottle opener – in an implement the size of a key ring. Targeted primarily at the youth market, the tool, that features an evocative, functional and ergonomic design, consists of a stainless steel structure in a polycarbonate shell, is assembled in a simple click and is resistant to both high and low temperatures – a vital prerequisite for the conditions in which it will largerly be used.
